Jake - Little Jake came to us from a family that really loved him, but their lifestyle wasn't the best for a Spaniel. Left alone for most of the day, with a hectic night schedule, Jake's confidence was slipping fast. Lucky for him, his humans saw that he needed more than they could give and he was handed to SDSR. With proper attention in his foster home, he blossomed into a great all-around family dog. Blossomed so much his foster family fell for him and adopted him permenantly!
Gilbert (aka Larry) - This goofy guy had personality oozing out of him, in spite of how sick he was when he reached us. Suffering from an advanced infestation of heartworm, Gilbert showed his spunky toughness through the harrowing treatment. His new family fell for him from the beginning and fostered him through his rehabilitation, and on to a great life. Our best guess is that Gilbert was a Cavalier/Dachshund mix.
Domino - Domino was such a loving soul considering his level of neglect from his original owner. He got around so well, his foster home didn't even know he was blind at first! She fell in love with him and adopted him into her family, and with corrective eye surgery has helped him to see again.
Mattie - What a story Mattie came with! She started off by catching our eye at an area shelter. They had her out on public view, a stray that had been hit by a car, and listed as a young unaltered male. Once we talked to the vet on duty, they rightfully pulled her back into medical - she had an injured eye that was on the verge of rupturing. The eye couldn't be saved, but she is lucky that is all she walked away with. SDSR found her owner - he had been by the shelter to look for her - but he was looking for a female, and the shelter only had a "male" out of view in medical. Once hearing of her injuries, the owner declined to take her back, but was able to tell us her history - including her age of 16 and a half years! Such a sweetie, we'd never have guessed her over 9 or 10. Her family fell in love with her wink and smile and gave her the best year of her life ever.
Boi (aka Aiden) - Little Boi and his brother Coco came to SDSR from a private owner who couldn't care for the dynamic duo as puppies. Each went happily into their new homes and graduated training with flying colors at the SD Humane Society. Boi adores his new mom and dad!
Coco - Coco lived under the shadow of Boi, his dominant older brother, for the first few months of his life. Now he runs his home! Also a graduate of the SD Humane Society's Head Start training course, Coco has blossomed with his new family.
Natola (aka Sadie) - Energetic Natola entered an area shelter as a stray and captured the hearts of all who met her. Renamed Sadie, she is giving her owner quite the run as her jogging companion - no amount of miles seem to tire her out!
Homer (aka Chet) - Homer and his sister were taken to a vet by their breeder as pups, to be put down. You see, this particular breeder isn't one we would call responsible. This was the second litter from a breeding pair of Brittanies that resulted in deaf puppies and the breeder was trying to destroy the evidence. Don't tell Homer he's deaf tho ... his new home says he can hear a car door from a block away!
Marge (aka Nell) - Marge is Homer's sister. When the breeder took them to the vet, the nice folks at Friends of Cats were there as well and just couldn't let these two young puppies be killed. They were looking for some dogs of their own anyway, to liven up the cat rescue and to be able to "dog test" the cats that came thru their doors. What they didn't know was that they had puppies of the energetic sort! Once they realized that Marge and Homer were too much for them to handle, they turned to SDSR for rehoming. They were adopted together into the same home and are the apples of the family's eye!
Daisy (aka Casey) - Daisy was a part of the "Family Four Pack" -
the four wonderful cockers that came to us together when their human mom could no longer care for them in her senior years. Little Daisy charmed her mom at first look and now is teaching two happy labradors what it is like to have a Cocker sister in the home. One week of relearning her housebreaking manners and she acts like she's lived in this home forever!
Woody (aka Buddy) - What a great dog that was totally
misunderstood! Woody's family called SDSR from out of state, not sure what to do next for him.
He was a sweet 7 month old pet store Cocker who lacked a good dose of confidence in his psyche.
His family loved him, they just didn't know what to do with him and couldn't understand that the
way they chose to train him (or not) would have such an impact on his development. This sensitive pup
was a "leaker" - some submissive urination when scared or excited. Instead of helping him learn
how to be a puppy (he spent the first five months of his life living in a windowed box at the pet store -
poor thing!) they would discipline him for it. They also described some resource guarding over
rawhide chews. Instead of just taking away the rawhides, they decided to drive him into San Diego
for help from SDSR. We found him to be a delight! His foster home taught him all about confidence and
puppiness and he was soon ready for a perfect home of his very own.
Crissi - Prissi Crissi, a diva in Cocker clothing! This
little 3 year old princess was getting away with just about anything she wanted in her former home. Including
guarding the husband from the wife. Not knowing how to work with her to correct this, they
relinquished her to shelter and SDSR was called in to help out. Crissi now has a human mom all
to herself with no reason to share - except with the cats!
Napa (aka Teddy) - This sweetheart Cocker had 2 different homes in
less than 11 months of life! His first home had health issues and gave him up to his second home
without doing any screening. "Free to good home" for Napa wasn't such a good home after all.
The family meant well, but they had no idea how to care for a puppy .. and with three children under
the age of 5, little Napa spent each day being chased, poked, beat with a plastic baseball bat,
having his tail pulled and suffering a 1.5 year old that liked to play in his food bowl! In spite
of all this, Napa still liked children. We were lucky to get him before he had learned to hate
them. Napa's new home has 2 young girls in it and between them and the parents, he now is
treated like a valued member of the family. Way to go, Napa!
Woozee (aka Zoozie) - The look of a perfect spaniel - tennis ball-obsessed Woozee has all the classic lines. This peppy 7 year old was relinquished by her owner who just couldn't handle an older dog, Woozee and a new puppy in the house. What a treat for us to get to spend time with this love! Woozee is now living the life in Northern California with a doggie sibling and a human mom and dad.
Buddy Boy - What a character! This fun-loving 3 year old was relinquished to the shelter by his owner - complaining that the 13 year old boy no longer takes care of the dog. When the shelter called SDSR, we met a happy-go-lucky, well bahaved parti boy with a body full of energy and love to spare. Happily living now in his new home, he is finally a family pet .. although his loyalty is to Alicia!
Lacey - Little Lacey - the first blind Cocker to come to SDSR, she taught us all so very much about life and love. Lacey stayed with her foster mom for just one day short of a year, before her untreatable health problems became too much for her to handle any longer. Assisted to the Rainbow Bridge while in her Foster Mom's arms, she is now reunited with her human mom in a place where she has perfect health and eyesight restored. Lacey's Legacy Fund was established in her honor ... this fund will help SDSR treat Cocker Spaniels with eye problems.
Pavarotti - Stunning! Talk about your good-looking Cocker Spaniel and you'll be talking about Pavarotti. Left in the care of family when his human mom passed away, Pav was biding his time waiting for his perfect forever home to come along since they couldn't care for him long-term. Surrounded by a loving family now, Pav is thriving with his increased level of care.
Charlie Brown - What a looker this handsome boy is! Deep chocolate fur and the most amazing hazel eyes. We can see how his first family fell for him at a pet store. Within 5 months they realized they just didn't have the proper home for an energetic young puppy tho and they handed him over to us to work with. One day of working with this smart boy and he had the housebreaking down. Another day and he started to learn his limits when playing with other dogs. Two weeks of fostering later and Charlie Brown was in the arms of his new forever owner!
